The Top Undiscussed Question Ever: WHY study Magick?

Got a question for you: WHY are you studying (or considering studying) magick?

That is a pretty innocent question but for almost all of the videos or books that are out there, I have found very little discussion as to WHY someone may consider studying magick.

Oh, sure, most authors or vloggers will sometimes tell you why THEY themselves got into magick but, like any good high school guidance counselor would do, has anyone ever asked YOU why? And have you asked yourself why you are considering magick?

It may be a very silly question but it is actually very important and, believe it or not, incredibly magickally powerful. By being honest and truthful with yourself, looking deep into your subconscious to proclaim why you are studying or considering studying magick, you are setting into motion within your own life, within your own life forces as well as your true will and intent, something that will rise to the conscious level.

People come to the study or (worse) practice of magick without really giving it any deep attention. This is actually a disservice to yourself and the Universe as well as potentially dangerous. I have a huge library of magickal texts and very few of them speak of the inherent dangers associated with practicing magick without a degree of respect (let alone seriousness); almost no modern magickal text I own has a disclaimer in the beginning yet there are many people who have approached magick from a variety of directions whom have had negative experiences, even some of them horrible ones.

Even Aleister Crowley, an experienced magus in his own right, experienced a failed magickal operation when attempting the Abramelin operation at Boleskin House near Loch Ness that has been known to end with disastrous results.

I am NOT trying to dissuade you from studying magick nor practicing magick. What I am hoping here for those who have stumbled upon this little diatribe of mine, is to inspire you to reach deep within yourself and answer the following two questions:

  1. WHY do you want to study magick?

  2. Is what you seek to attain through magick able to be obtained by any other way?

An example is money. People conduct magickal operations all of the time to obtain more wealth. Is there a way for you to attain the amount of funds you seek another way, without magick? For example, a second or part-time job? Or sell something?

Damon Echols, a well-known experienced magician, even speaks of such an example, telling about a man who was lonely and seeking the attention of a specific woman. Performing magick to make himself more desirable to her, one day he experiences a horrific accident which leaves him physically disabled…which was a fetish that the woman he sought was attracted to.

So, the magick worked…but was the price worth it?

The results of magick, no matter what, comes at a cost…do not be fooled that it does not. That is something important to consider: is what you seek to attain through magick worth the cost of it if it is obtained through magick?

For some people, the answer may be “yes”. And that is good…as long as we know what we are getting involved with, that is very important. I am not trying to scare anyone away; I am trying to inspire in whoever cares to listen to be real and honest with yourself as to WHY you are doing this. Because that helps greatly in the long run!
